Recipe for Cranberry Sangria

I first learned this recipe from a web video about three years ago and have loved making it since. It's a great treat for the holidays

There are three steps:

1) Make spiced simple syrup. I don't know if you could actually buy this somewhere but making it isn't too difficult.
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
2 (3-inch) cinnamon sticks or 4 dashes of cinnamon powder
4 allspice berries or 4 dashes of allspice powder
3 cloves
2 anise pods

  1. Combine all ingredients in a saucepan over high heat and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally.
  2. Remove from heat and let cool.
  3. Strain syrup.

2) Prep fruit.
2 cups cranberries
2 Granny Smith apples (large dice)
1 cup Spiced Simple Syrup (made in step #1)
3/4 cup Cointreau
1/2 cup port wine

  1. Combine all ingredients into a container with a tightfitting lid.
  2. Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours or preferably overnight.

3) Make Sangria.
1 bottle rosé (medium to bold to offset the sweetness of the syrup)
1/2 cup port wine
1/2 cup Cointreau
1/2 cup cranberry juice

  1. Add all ingredients to the fruit mixture and stir to combine.
  2. Refrigerate until chilled; serve over ice
  3. Enjoy!
